During the past 10 years, I have lived in several Finnish cities: Vaasa, Lahti, Helsinki, Vantaa and Jyväskylä, and out of these five cities, Jyväskylä is the one that has made a lasting impact on me. I consider Jyväskylä as a vibrant, yet cozy city, and it offers a little something for everyone – whether you feel like going out for a nice dinner, having a relaxing cup of coffee or tea, or getting some fresh air by going out for a run or taking a walk around lake Jyväsjärvi, Jyväskylä most likely has it. In this blog post, I will briefly introduce you my three favorite destinations here in Jyväskylä.
Lake Jyväsjärvi
Jyväsjärvi is a beautiful lake at the heart of the city. Although there are several different water sports activities available during the summertime, and in the winter, you can ski or skate on the lake, my personal favorite is the walking and cycling route called “Rantaraitti” that goes round the lake. As there are three bridges that cross the lake at different points, you can choose the length of your route from several different options: 1 km, 5-6 km, 8 km, or 13 km, for example.
City lighting
Okay, I must admit, April may not be the best time to admire light installations in Finland. As the days are getting longer and the sun is setting around 9 p.m., you will have to go out quite late to be able to enjoy the city lighting, but it is well worth it. According to Visit Jyväskylä, there are more than 100 lighting sites in the city: parks, buildings, bridges, etc.
Agora campus area
I might be a bit biased, but I think the Agora campus area is the most beautiful one in Finland. It is located right by the lake Jyväsjärvi – a view you will be able to enjoy while having lunch at the campus restaurant Piato. Agora has an airy and light atmosphere, and while working and studying here at Agora, I have also found that it is a place where ideas come to life. So, I’m excited to meet you all at 9th Symposium on Creative Education – see you then, both onsite and online!
